I have been playing poker and writing home brew tools for a while, and recently started writing some for friends, mostly educational and analytical.

Salon featured a video yesterday on brewing beer in a pumpkin , and both the topic and the franchise struck me as clever.

Last week, I joined a group for a hiking weekend in the Sauerland. We stayed at the Waldhaus hotel in Fockinghausen, which is perched on the top of a hill and surrounded by verdant pastures filled with satisfied-looking cows.

It's a pizza joint. No, it's a brewpub. Pizza joint! Brewpub! It's both. It's a Breweria! The father-an- son team of Tom and Mason Hembree are getting ready to open Dad & Dudes Breweria in Aurora later this month.

There's a five-gallon jug of cider fermenting in our house. It's in a mini root-cellar below the mud room, where it will remain until Town Meeting Day, when I've been given the go-ahead to pull the plug, pour and drink.

The former Coors brewery in Memphis may be getting its fifth owner since opening in the early 1970s.
