Some might question the wisdom in promoting beer to college students, but officials at Appalachian State University said the school's beer brewing program helps tackle the issue of binge drinking head-on. The course is named Honors Chemistry: Intro To Beer Brewing, and yes, it's an actual academic class at the university.

Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, founders of the Pike Brewing Company, are in town Wednesday and Thursday and will be at Bailey's Taproom this evening before repairing to Higgins for a Pike Brewing beer dinner, and at the Green Dragon tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Finkels opened the Pike Place Brewery in 1989 in the Pike Place Public Market.
